So. What happens when a bunch of Los Angeles Young Adult authors - affectionately known as the LAYAs - www.myspace.com/losLAYAs - decide to put on a show?
Well, it's nothing Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland would ever dream up!
It's LAYAPALOOZA and we took our act to the Association of Booksellers for Children's - www.abfc.com - first day at Book Expo America - www.bookexpoamerica.com - which just HAPPENED to be in Los Angeles this year.

From left to right that's Lisa Yee - www.lisayee.com - yours truly, Michael Reisman - www.michaelreisman.com - Amy Goldman Koss - www.amygoldmankoss.net - Carol Tanzman - http://www.jacketflap.com/bookdetail.asp?b ookid=0761315888 - Mark London Williams - www.dangerboy.com - and Kerry Madden - www.kerrymadden.com, and yes, we're all making "jazz hands".
What exactly IS LAYAPALOOZA, I can hear you ask through the internet ether?
Well, it's a live game show that tests contestants' knowledge of young adult and middle grade literature with games GUARANTEED to amaze and amuse.
The games included "Title Wave" where we gave the first line of a YA/MG novel and multiple choice answers. Lisa Yee's husband Scott got her title, MILLICENT MIN, GIRL GENUIS, right away. If he hadn't, I'm sure it would have been a LONG walk home.
We played "Red Carpet Rumble" where the STAR of the book describes him or herself and the contestants must name the title of the book.
We played "Son of a Pitch" where contestants choose 2 random book titles out of a hat and, combining the titles, had to come up with a movie pitch based on the mash up. Extra bonus applause was given for "casterbation"...a favorite Hollywood game that involves "dream" casting a movie with well known stars.
But here was my fave - Michael Reisman as "Mr. Author Spelling Bee Man".

Contestants got up close and personal with Michael, especially as the list of authors got lower, and lower...
Of COURSE we awarded AMAZING and HIGHLY COVETED SWAG -

LAYAPALOOZA bracelets AND books. Yes - even though contestants were going to BEA and getting hundreds of free books, we beat EVERYONE to the punch, and we even signed 'em.
And then Amy Koss got a hold of Lisa Yee's perpetual photo sidekick, Peepy, and it wasn't pretty.

Oooo, Amy HATES Peepy. Fortunately Peepy recovered and went on to meet many famous folks at BEA.
So, WHERE can YOU see LAYAPALOOZA?
Glad you asked! We'll be peforming at the American Library Association - www.ala.org - convention in Anaheim in the ALA pavilion on Saturday, June 28 from 2-3 PM.
Do come see us, play the games and take home some swag you can be proud of 'cuz you EARNED IT!
